Middlesbrough will go first in the shootout, with the action set to take place in front of the Stretford End.

FULL TIME IN EXTRA TIME: Manchester United 1-1 Middlesbrough

Well, we are going to penalties after there were no goals in extra time. Middlesbrough are so close to pulling off a cup upset!

Minute 115: Big chance for Boro!

Howson’s long free-kick was headed down by McNair into the path of Connolly, but Henderson was able to make a good save to stop the Middlesbrough striker from scoring.

Extra time: Second half

Manchester United have 15 minutes left, plus stoppage time, if they are to avoid going to penalties.

HALF TIME IN EXTRA TIME: Manchester United 1-1 Middlesbrough

This game increasingly looks as though it is going to go to penalties. Can Middlesbrough pull off a famous cup upset?

Minute 105+1: Fred misses the target

Fred received the ball on the edge of the box and looked to get a right-footed shot away, but he didn’t make a good connection and it went miles wide.

Minute 104: Half chance goes begging

Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross into the six-yard box towards McTominay was flicked away by Lumley. United really haven’t created any clear-cut chances so far in extra time.

Extra time: First half

Manchester United have kicked off the first half of extra time. The halves are 15 minutes apiece, and if we do not have any goals we will go to penalties.

FULL TIME: Manchester United 1-1 Middlesbrough

Jadon Sancho gave Manchester United a first-half lead, but Matt Crooks equalised for Middlesbrough after the break in controversial circumstances, as Duncan Watmore appeared to handle the ball before crossing it to him. The fact they are level after 90 minutes means we are going to extra time!

Minute 90+1: Elanga header saved

Fred’s floated cross towards the back post was met by Elanga, who rose above Neil Taylor, but his header went straight into the arms of Lumley.

Minute 72: United hit the post!

Bruno Fernandes is the latest United player to miss a gilt-edged chance, as he dispossessed Howson deep inside the Boro half but then saw his shot hit the outside of the left post and go away from danger.


Matt Crooks got on the end of Duncan Watmore’s looped cross inside the area and fired home from close range, but the United players were left furious as the ball appeared to strike Watmore’s hand before he played the cross. Nevertheless, it stands. Manchester United 1-1 Middlesbrough.

Minute 57: Crooks tests Henderson

The ball was cut back to Matt Crooks just on the edge of the six-yard box, but his effort was pushed behind for a corner by Henderson. That’s the first time the United goalkeeper has really been tested.

Minute 54: Rashford spurns chance

Sancho picked out Rashford in the middle, but he could only send his shot over the bar. United really should be ahead by more than one goal.

SECOND HALF: Action back underway

Manchester United have kicked off this second half. Let’s see if they can add to their one-goal lead, or if Middlesbrough can make things interesting.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 1-0 Middlesbrough

Jadon Sancho’s goal is all that separates the two teams at half time, but in truth Manchester United could easily be three or four goals ahead. Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder will be glad that there is only a goal in it, though.

Minute 40: Rashford’s shot saved

A well-worked corner by United led to Rashford getting a shot away from the D, but it was straight at Lumley.

Minute 30: GOAL FOR UNITED… but it’s offside

Marcus Rashford has smashed in a shot from the outside of the box, but he was half a yard offside. Correct call by the linesman.


Sancho missed a chance in the first 90 seconds of the game, but he has given Manchester United the lead in this fourth-round tie. Bruno Fernandes played a long pass into the path of Sancho, who sized up Isaiah Jones before sending a left-footed shot towards goal that deflected past Joe Lumley. Manchester United 1-0 Middlesbrough.

Minute 20: Cristiano Ronaldo… misses!

Cristiano Ronaldo sends his penalty wide of the left post. It remains 0-0.

Minute 19: Penalty for United!

Paul Pogba was brought down in the area by Anfernee Dijksteel, who appeared to slip. Definite penalty.

Minute 16: All United so far

Manchester United seem to be in relative control of this game, although they will want to open the scoring in the not-too-distant future in order to calm any nerves inside Old Trafford. Middlesbrough are counter-attacking with speed, but Raphael Varane has been on hand to sniff out any danger.

Minute 6: Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead kick

Luke Shaw’s floated cross from the left led to Cristiano Ronaldo attempting an overhead kick, but he didn’t make a strong enough connection and it was easily saved by Lumley.

Minute 2: Sancho hits the crossbar!

A mix-up in the Middlesbrough defence gave Sancho the chance to try and lob Lumley from just outside the area, but his effort hit the crossbar.

Ralf Rangnick has named Paul Pogba, who is making his first game back from injury, and Cristiano Ronaldo in tonight’s starting XI. Will they be able to combine in front of goal?
